Alicorp is the market leader for branded consumer goods in Peru; and leader in aquafeed products in Chile, Ecuador and Honduras. The demand for products that Alicorp produces in several countries across Latin America including Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Chile and Honduras, has seen an increase as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; hence Alicorp decided to mandate SMBC to arrange for the syndicated program to achieve several goals. On one hand, negotiating extension of payment terms and securing procurement of commodities, which are critical inputs for the goods that company produces, through term contracts. In like manner, arrangement of the syndicated program enabled Alicorp to diversify its sources of funding for the program while allowed the entrance of four new relationship banks for Alicorp within Trade Finance space, through the structure arranged by SMBC. In addition, The program involved a careful arrangement for the structure to cover legal, perfection and tax matters in three different jurisdictions. The suppliers based in the United States of America and Canada, the buyer based in Uruguay and the buyer’s parent in Peru. All these elements make this transaction a one of its kind specially during the challenges presented by Covid-19 Pandemic situation.
